ILM's first full-length animated feature stars Johnny Depp as the voice of a chameleon suffering an identity crisis, as he finds himself out of his comfy terrarium and desperately attempting to blend in to the wild world around him. Before he knows it, he's posing as sheriff in a rough and tumble frontier town called Dirt, where the life expectancy of a lawman is shorter than a sno-cone in July.

  1. Gotta love an underdog: Rango was the first non-Pixar film to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar since 2007.
  2. Major first: Rango was Industrial Light & Magic's first full-length animated feature ever.
  3. Another major first: this was also the first animated film for director Gore Verbinski.
  4. Beyond the voiceover booth: the film's actors used real costumes and sets to help them capture the feel of the Wild West during recording.
  5. Eagle eyes, pay attention: you'll see references to many other films (especially Westerns) in Rango, including A Fistful of Dollars, Once Upon a Time in the West, and Raising Arizona.
  6. Look familiar? Rattlesnake Jake was modeled after legendary spaghetti Western star Lee Van Cleef.
  7. Another film reference: Rango calls Priscilla "little sister," which is also Rooster Cogburn's pet name for Mattie Ross in True Grit.
  8. Although he's voiced by Timothy Olyphant, iconic Western star Clint Eastwood was the visual inspiration for the character known as the Spirit of the West.
  9. When Rango first enters the saloon, an owl at the poker table is holding two pair: black aces and black eights. That's also known as "Dead Man's Hand," the cards held by Wild Bill Hickok when he was shot in South Dakota.
  10. Odd outlaws: two of the wanted posters in the sheriff's office offer rewards for ne'er do wells named "Lockjaw Smith" and "Disco Lovejoy."
